English Winter Fair This event was held at Stafford Showground over the weekend of 19th and 20th of November. The pig classes were very successful with an increase from 30 pairs in 2010 to 40 pairs this year. The following breeds were represented: Large White, Welsh, Pietrain, Hampshire, Berkshire, Saddleback, Oxford Sandy and Black, Large Black, Gloucester Old Spot, Middle White, British Lop and a variety of crossbreds. The pigs were judged by Mrs F. Slade and judging was in three groups: Modern, Traditional and Crossbred with classes for bacon, cutter and pork within those groups. The general feeling from the exhibitors was that the weekend was very successful and enjoyable. There was 3 pairs of Berkshire forward from Paul and Sarah Ashcroft and these were shown by their daughters Charlotte and Eve who did a fantastic job Well Done girls. A very pleasant evening meal was attended by nearly thirty of the exhibitors. What a great night we all had the kids had a good time in the play area. The pigs were housed in a heated annex to Bingley Hall with an indoor judging ring. In addition to the pigs there was a large entry of sheep and 400 beef cattle. There was also a good entry of carcases of beef, lamb, pork pigs and turkeys in the carcase hall. A very busy and well attended Christmas Fayre was held in the Prestwood annex. The main results were as follows: Many thanks are due to Mrs Slade for judging the live pigs. The success of this event shows how much can be achieved when B.P.A. Members work together in a positive manner. There was also a produce section which was great fun even if you didn’t receive an award the comment were very encouraging and gave you a boost for next year’s competition. I got a Bronze award with pork and apple pie, Chris Coe received Silver for her sausage so we all did well. Hopefully we will have more forward next year.
