Best Organic Pork in Britain 2004 is Pedigree Berkshire
Uploaded November 2004

An Organic ‘Berkshire’ Pork Loin from Dittisham Farm at Capton, Nr Dartmouth, has won the prestigious Soil Association Organic Pork Award 2004.

Sue & Paul Fildes farm traditional black pigs of the ‘Berkshire’ breed. It is a hardy outdoor pig that at Dittisham Farm never sees the inside of a shed – they live happily in fields with arcs for shelter for the whole of their life, free ranging on grass with supplementary Organic rations. Their pork has notably more visible fat than modern commercial pork, this results in more succulence and taste, and very good crackling on the cooked joints.

To win the award, each entrant presented two loins of pork, one cooked, one raw, to the 5 judges. The meat was scored on Taste, Appearance, Recipe, Provenance and Craftsmanship, and the Dittisham Farm loins were judged to be the outright winners. The judging panel for each category was not aware of who supplied any of the meats until the judging process was complete.

Sue Fildes says ‘It’s great to win this award – it shows that we were right to choose to raise pork from a traditional breed for the extra fat and flavour.’ The pigs don’t just taste good – they look good. Sue has produced pigs that have won the Berkshire breed championship at the last two Royal Cornwall shows.

Congratulations are due to ‘Well Hung Meat’ based at Tordean Farm, Dean Prior, who prepared and presented these joints to the competition.

Meat and sausages from Dittisham Farm are available either direct from the farm on 01803 712452 or by mail order from ‘Well Hung Meat’ at www.wellhungmeat.co.uk.
