Hatfield Country Show
Uploaded December 2011

This year Pierre (Peter) was asked if he would be chief steward at the Hatfield Show, and if I could help him by being in charge of all the movement licences. Pierre has regularly helped with the stewarding and setting up of this show over the last few years, but it is quite a different matter when you are in charge, and have to deal with all the queries and occasional complaints! However, on the whole all went smoothly once we had sorted out extra pens for the Kune Kune pigs, because the show staff had not set the pens out correctly so that we had the 180 pens we needed. We arrived on the Wednesday before the show which runs from Friday to Sunday, and spent a lot of time allocating all the exhibitors their pens and finding kit pens too, not any easy task when there are not enough pens in the first place! Thursday was a very busy day with the majority of exhibitors arriving, and we were lucky enough to have two very reliable stewards Tony Schofield and Brian Upchurch helping us who oversaw all the unloading, and indeed these two were invaluable in helping the show to run smoothly and making sure the correct exhibitors were in the ring for each class. In the meantime I dealt with all the movement licences but next year maybe I will be redundant because the licences are going to be done on line in future (although provision will be made for those who don’t have access to the internet). We were also ably assisted by Hannah Rose who kept results for me, helped steward and also shadow judged on the Sunday. Pierre also judged the Kune Kune classes on the Sunday and I was pleased to be ring steward to Middle White judge John Herbert.

This very enjoyable Show held over three days in the grounds of Hatfield House by kind permission of the Marquess has been running for approx 8 years now. As well as having the usual Breed classes it hosts the final of the BPA Young Pig of the Year competition, the final for the Young Handlers classes held during the year at various shows around the country, the British Saddleback Champion of Champions and the Kune Kune breed classes which used to be held on their own in another ring, but are now combined in with the main pig show.

For the purposes of this report I will be giving the results for the Berkshire classes only.

The BPA Copas Challenge Trophy for the Best Berkshire Pig was won by Barlings Freight Train with the reserve going to Choller Namatjira. The YPOY Male Championship went to the Large White boar Portredy Suri owned by Steve Loveless with the Berkshire boar Choller Namatjira as reserve. Female Champion went to Portbredy Champion Lady (LW) and the overall Champion Young Pig of the Year was won by Portbredy Suri and the reserve was the Berkshire boar Choller Namatjira, continuing his 2011 show successes.

As well as the pigs at the Hatfield Show, it also hosts a Sheep Show and has a very interesting Children’s Farm area housed in a large marquee with many types of livestock, including horses, donkeys, pigs, chickens, rabbits and quinea pigs. There is a Heavy Horse arena with on-going displays of working horses, vintage tractors, vintage steam traction engines, a countryside area and plenty of stalls for those who like shopping, plus a fairground. A good day out for those not exhibiting themselves and the sun always seems to shine on us (apart from a huge downpour on the Thursday!).
